BIODIVERSITY – Angola LNG Supports Biodiversity
Angola LNG continues and will continue to support biodiversity conservation through actions in four major areas:
-
Protect biodiversity throughout the project – Biodiversity Action Plan
-
Engage in partnerships, collaborations, & contributions
-
Communicate, promote, & monitor biodiversity activities
-
Support research & education for improved biodiversity conservation
One of Angola LNG’s commitments is towards raising awareness and integration of local communities in conservation. Environmental education and outreach will be carried out throughout the region, including seminars, workshops, and informal discussions. The pilot project “Projecto Sereia” is focused on environmental education activities combined with the promotion of non-exploitive sustainable alternatives for fishermen and their families. The involvement of the local communities was key in making “Projecto Sereia” successful.
Additionally, a sea turtle awareness campaign was initiated within the workforce and local communities.
The turtle researchers and their assistants from the local villages also called Tartarugueiras, regularly patrol approximately 17 km of beach and protect the nests on about 6 km of the Atlantic coastline from villages at Bocolo and Fundão.
The sea turtles’ breeding season is from September to March.
All sea turtles are identified and tagged in order to study their migratory paths and biological cycle.
A hatchery was built on Ponta do Padrão for the relocation and protection of threatened turtle nests and their hatchlings. Here the eggs are protected from predators and the hatchlings are released safely to the sea. Some nests are left to incubate on the beach and monitored daily. The female turtle comes to the beach every 15 days to lay approximately 130 eggs.
